I thought buying a generator would be straightforward. I made a list of a few appliances, compared several product pages, looked at the biggest watt number I could find, and ordered the model that seemed right. The problem only became clear when I tried to use it.

The generator could handle some small devices, but when the equipment I actually cared about started running, the load was too much. The startup demand was higher than I expected, the runtime did not match what I had imagined, and the product-page specifications suddenly felt much less simple than they had before the purchase.

By then, the generator had already been used. Returning it was no longer a clean or easy option. I had spent money on the wrong unit, lost time dealing with the problem, and still needed to buy a replacement.

That experience also taught me the opposite lesson: simply buying the largest generator is not always the smart solution either. A system that is far larger than necessary can cost more, use more fuel, be heavier, create more noise, and be harder to store or move. The real goal is not to buy the smallest or the biggest generator. It is to buy the right one for the devices, startup loads, runtime, charging options, and conditions that actually matter to you.
